Matt Elwell is an East Texas native, born in Longview and raised in the small town of Greenville. He’s been a Houston resident since 2009 and recently put down roots in Houston’s Heights neighborhood.
Mr. Elwell graduated cum laude from Texas State University in May 2009 with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Business Administration. He focused on courses in business management, business law, economics, marketing, and communications.
Mr. Elwell then graduated from South Texas College of Law in the spring of 2012, in the top quarter of his class. In law school, he participated in South Texas College of Law’s moot court and mock trial programs. Mr. Elwell received the Cali Award for Excellence for his grade in his “Baseball and the Law” course. He also earned the American Jurisprudence designation for his paper Hydraulic Fracturing – A Products Liability Prospective.
Since graduation, Mr. Elwell has worked in numerous areas of the law, but he’s always known his real passion was for representing people who have been injured. Mr. Elwell firmly believes clients deserve someone who is willing to fight for their rights and obtain their rightful compensation. He handles a variety of personal injury matters, including motor vehicle and trucking accident cases, workers’ compensation injuries, oil field injuries, BP oil spill cases, hail/windstorm cases, Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act violations, and many other civil litigation cases for the firm.
Prior to becoming an associate at the Amaro Law Firm, Mr. Elwell worked as an attorney at a Houston based Criminal Defense firm for over two years. His time in criminal defense allowed him to sharpen his litigation techniques. It can take years for a civil lawyer to get half the amount of courtroom and trial experience Mr. Elwell received during his time as a criminal defense attorney. Prior to that, Mr. Elwell worked at a small downtown civil firm. There, he was able to handle a range of legal matters such as, personal injury, Texas Deceptive Trade Practices cases, and other civil litigation matters.
In his spare time, Mr. Elwell enjoys being outdoors – whether it’s golfing, fishing, hunting, or just hanging out in the sun. Being a former player, Mr. Elwell thoroughly enjoys watching baseball and is a Texas Rangers season ticket holder. In the fall, you can catch Mr. Elwell watching the Dallas Cowboys and hoping for another Super Bowl in his lifetime.
